How Is a Silicone Mold Made?

The first step in the mold making process is making sure the model to be molded is clean and dry. The model is placed inside a mold box, and walls are built around it to ensure a leak proof seal. Two component silicone rubber is then mixed in the ratios recommended by the manufacturer and de-aired to remove bubbles. The mixture is poured slowly and in a thin layer over the model so no air gaps form between the details. Once the silicone has fully cured, it is removed from the mold and is ready for use. Curing time varies depending on the type of silicone used; some products harden within a few hours, while others may require up to 24 hours.

Silicone Mold Making FAQ

For silicone mold making, you primarily need two component silicone rubber and a hardener (catalyst). In addition, a mold box to hold the model, a mixing container and stirring stick, and a digital scale for precise measurement are required. A vacuum chamber is preferred to remove air bubbles. A mold release spray applied to the model surface prevents the silicone from sticking. For complex models, a supporting plaster or fiberglass outer shell can also be prepared. Using quality materials for all of these is important for achieving a durable and long lasting mold.

The curing time of a silicone mold varies depending on the type of silicone used, its thickness, and the ambient temperature. Generally, some silicone types take shape within a few hours at room temperature, but waiting 24 hours is recommended for full curing. For thick castings and large molds, this period can extend up to 48 hours. In humid or cold environments, the curing process may slow down, so ideal conditions should be maintained. Using the mold before it fully cures can cause surface defects and shape distortion, so following manufacturer instructions is important.

The main reason air bubbles form in a silicone mold is that air gets trapped in the silicone and hardener during mixing. Mixing too quickly or with the wrong technique traps excess air inside the mixture. Additionally, pouring the silicone too fast and in a thick layer increases bubble formation. To prevent this issue, the mixture should be de-aired using a vacuum chamber. Pouring slowly in a thin stream helps prevent air from getting trapped in detailed areas. Using high quality silicone also significantly reduces the risk of bubbles.

Silicone molds work well with a fairly wide range of materials. They can easily be used with resin, plaster, concrete, wax, soap, ceramic slip, and polyester. Thanks to the flexible structure of silicone, these materials separate easily from the mold once poured, without damaging the surface. For processes requiring high heat, such as bronze casting, silicone molds are generally used as an intermediate mold. For cosmetics and soap production, food safe silicone types should be preferred. The intended use of the mold should always be considered when choosing materials.

For sculpture work, two component platinum based or tin based silicone rubbers are generally preferred. Platinum based silicones last longer and capture fine details with high precision, which is why professional sculptors frequently use them. Tin based silicones are more economical and suitable for medium detail work. Casting silicone should be chosen for large scale sculptures, while mold silicone works better for small and detailed figures. When choosing, the size of the sculpture, the level of detail, and how many times the mold will be used should always be considered.

The main reason a silicone mold tears during casting is that it was prepared too thin or made with low quality material. When the hardness value does not match the shape of the model, tension increases in recessed areas and the mold can tear over time. Additionally, using the mold too frequently or carelessly causes it to lose its flexibility. Using hot material during casting can also weaken the silicone structure. Preparing the mold at the correct thickness, choosing silicone with appropriate hardness, and storing it carefully greatly reduces the risk of tearing.
