What is Antique?
The word "Antique" (or Ancient) is a comprehensive concept that encompasses meanings of old, historical, and deep-rooted. Derived from the Latin word "antiquus," this term is generally used to define the period belonging to Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations; however, in a broader sense, it covers all kinds of old artifacts carrying historical value. In the fields of art, architecture, and archaeology, the concept of "antique" refers to a specific time period and the production philosophy of that era.
Time Periods of the Ancient Era
In academic circles, the ancient period generally covers the process from the invention of writing to the fall of the Western Roman Empire—roughly from 3000 BC to 476 AD. Within this vast time interval, Sumerian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations stand out as the most noteworthy. In archaeology and art history, the term "ancient" is used more specifically to define Classical Antiquity, namely the Ancient Greek and Roman periods. When ancient sculpture is mentioned, the works belonging to these two civilizations are the first to come to mind.
Ancient Sculpture Art
Ancient sculpture art represents one of the brightest periods in human history. The tradition, which began with a rigid and static approach in the Archaic period, reached its peak in the Classical period with an understanding of naturalism, balance, and idealized beauty. In the Hellenistic period, dramatic expression, movement, and emotion were intensely crafted into the sculpture. The Venus de Milo, the Laocoön Group, and the Winged Victory of Samothrace are among the best-known masterpieces of ancient sculpture. These works continue to deeply influence contemporary sculpture art today.

Ancient artifacts have always held a special place in the art market and the world of collecting. Museums, private collectors, and states have exerted great effort throughout history to possess ancient works. However, the illegal trade and smuggling of ancient artifacts remain a serious issue. Turkey exhibits an extremely sensitive attitude in this regard and carries out intense diplomatic efforts for the return of ancient artifacts taken abroad. Antiquities trafficking is considered not only a legal issue but also a serious threat to the common cultural heritage of humanity.
Contemporary Sculpture Inspired by Antiquity
The ancient sculpture tradition continues to be a powerful source of inspiration in today's art world. The Neoclassical movement consciously reinterpreted ancient works; Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical artists took ancient models as their primary references. Today, many sculpture workshops produce contemporary works inspired by ancient forms. Furthermore, ancient sculpture reproductions are produced via custom orders for collectors and decorative purposes.
