Jorge Oteiza - Spanish Sculptor
Jorge Oteiza is undisputedly one of the most original and intellectual figures of Spanish and especially Basque sculpture. Born in 1908 in the town of Orio in the Basque Region, Oteiza was a multidimensional figure who played a central role in the reconstruction of Basque cultural identity, not only as a sculptor but also as a poet, theorist, educator, and cultural activist. Being one of the two names who brought Basque sculpture to the world stage alongside his contemporary and rival Eduardo Chillida, Oteiza, unlike Chillida, completely gave up sculpture at a certain point in his career. After winning the first prize at the São Paulo Biennial in 1959, Oteiza completely quit sculpture. His explanation was striking: he had completed his research and there was no meaning in continuing. He had reached the void and there was nothing left to say. This decision represents an attitudinal determination almost unprecedented in art history.
After his sculpture, Oteiza concentrated on writing on poetry, cultural research, and Basque identity.
