Mozambique's capital Maputo is a city that carries the legacy of one of Africa's most important anti-colonial figures. Eduardo Mondlane, the founder and first president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO), launched the armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule and is remembered as the "architect of national unity." Today Maputo is home to a monument statue rising on the avenue that bears his name, symbolising the nation's spirit of resistance. Construction and History of the Statue
The new statue dedicated to Eduardo Mondlane was unveiled on 25 September 2024, as part of celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Defence of Mozambique, in a solemn ceremony led by the President of the Republic. The new statue replaced a previous one located at the same site. Cast in copper, the statue stands 6 metres tall and weighs 6,410 kilograms; five educational plaques mounted on marble plinths document key moments from Mondlane's life, from his birth through his academic and political career. The statue's base has been engineered to withstand winds of up to 200 kilometres per hour. Officials highlighted that the monument has been equipped with QR-coded information boards to connect with tourism, giving visitors access to additional digital content.

The Eduardo Mondlane statue depicts him with his fist raised and holding a book two elements that together symbolise both armed resistance and his academic identity. Mondlane was a PhD-holding academic, thinker and revolutionary; the fact that this dual identity has been reflected in the statue is deeply meaningful. The statue stands at the head of the avenue bearing his name, and together with its illuminated information boards and modern plaza, offers visitors both a visual and historical experience. Mondlane is also commemorated at Maputo's Praça dos Heróis Moçambicanos (Heroes Square), where his remains are preserved alongside those of Samora Machel in a star-shaped monument.

Eduardo Mondlane University, founded in 1962 and the oldest higher education institution in Mozambique, stands out as the most significant institution keeping Mondlane's legacy alive in the academic sphere. The Legacy of Mondlane
Eduardo Mondlane was born in southern Mozambique in 1920; he completed his undergraduate and doctoral studies in South Africa and the United States, and is among the rare African intellectuals to have served at the United Nations. In 1962 he founded FRELIMO and launched organised resistance against Portuguese colonial rule, declaring the armed struggle on 25 September 1964. He was assassinated on 3 February 1969 in Dar es Salaam by a parcel bomb sent to him. Mozambique gained its independence in 1975 a moment that has gone down in history as the realisation of Mondlane's dream.

The Eduardo Mondlane Statue is located in central Maputo, on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue, and can be reached easily on foot or by taxi from anywhere in the city centre. Every year on 3 February Heroes Day, marking the anniversary of Mondlane's assassination official ceremonies are held around the monument, making a visit on that date a particularly meaningful experience.
